38: Now it came to pass, as they went, that he (Jesus) entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39: And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet and heard his word.
40: But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me.
41: And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things.
42: But one thing is needful; and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Like Martha, many of us find ourselves being so concerned over moment-to-moment matters that fill our normal day that we tend to leave our spiritual nourishment to Sunday. In some cases even putting Sunday¹s off until we have little or no spiritual food at all.
In this scripture Jesus points out to Martha the serving is of no real consequence compared to the nurturing of the Soul and Spirit that comes from His Word. Of course, he was not saying not to serve the necessary needs of the flesh such as food and hospitality. He was saying the Spiritual needs should be seen to before the physical needs.
When we see to it that we read his word daily, at the beginning of each day, we will abide in him and he in us (John 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.). In so doing the events of the day will go much smoother and be more productive because our spiritual health affects our ability to make decisions, judgments, and response to both circumstance, events and others, as well as to handle a crisis if need be; be organized; be mentally and emotionally alert; be happy and positive; be whole.
Jesus points out to Martha that His teaching was the GOOD PART, but that Mary chose the good part. We must also choose to make His word important enough to us to set aside the time necessary to read and meditate in his word each and every day. It must become the first part of our day. Rise early, before the children wake, before preparing breakfast, before dressing for work, before taking the kids to school, before the phone begins to ring, before the active day beginsŠwhen it is still and calm. One hour early to be with the Lord in Word, Psalms, Thanksgiving, Prayer, Meditation, Worship.
Prov. 8:17 "I love them that love me; and those that seek me early SHALL FIND ME."
The reward is too great to miss out on.
All of life is a choice for us....so choose Life first!
